How to Raise the Bonnet on the Astra H

I know this is probably one of the most simple tasks when owning a car, but it is true that some wouldn’t know where to start on tasks such as raising the bonnet. This is why I started this site, to help others maintain their own cars.

Items you’ll need

  • Hands
  • Keys

  1. Unlock your car and open the drivers door
  2. In the footwell, near the door pillar, you will see a lever, pull that towards you (Figure 1). The bonnet is now released.
  3. Astra H Bonnet Lever release

(Figure 1) Pull Lever towards you and release.

  4. Underneath the bonnet opening, there is a safety catch, press this up towards the roof of the bonnet (Figure 2)
  5. Astra H Bonnet Catch release

(Figure 2) Release Safety catch and lift

  6. On most Astras the bonnet will be held up by gas struts, if not, you will need to use a bonnet stay to prop the bonnet up.
  7. To lower the bonnet, remove the bonnet stay (if applicable) and lover the bonnet ensuring that it locks down fully.

I am a car enthusiast and have owned a few Astras in my time, I am not a trained mechanic. I enjoy making my information available to you via this website and try to point out some tips along the way if I can. I can't promise that anything I show you will work for your particular car, or that you won't harm yourself, someone else, your car or your warranty by doing it. Be safe, be responsible and unless you know what you're doing, do not play around with very serious machinery. Please consult a qualified mechanic if you are in any doubt.
